In the end, results are what matters.

Below are examples of recent CMM success stories and accomplishments.

Case 1:

CMM has an ongoing relationship with one of the most important credit card companies.  This client hired us to carry forth a strategy that would make credit card fraud a “delito grave,” (a serious crime).  As part of the plan, CMM created and managed a not-for-profit coalition of supporters of this legislation, which remains in operation today.

CMM established contacts with legislators, involved other interested parties in the efforts and established a communications campaign to support the effort.  We began at the state level and were able to lobby for the modification of the criminal statutes in five states (Quintana Roo, Jalisco, Estado de México, Nuevo León and the Federal District).  A major victory came last year when legislation was passed at in the federal Congress’s Chamber of Deputies.   The legislation in now pending in the Senate.

For this same client, we provide strategic counsel on financial regulatory issues and have established a network of contacts at Mexico’s Central Bank (Banxico) and at the Treasury (Hacienda) in order to influence policies that would have negatively affected their businesses.  We provided written arguments as to why a change of policy would be imprudent, providing international examples to sustain our case.  The particular policy of concern has yet to be put into effect and our client now has high-level access to government officials that it did not previously enjoy.

Case 2:

An international beverage producer hired CMM to achieve the removal of an unnecessary sanitary import permit that was negatively impacting their business as a result of bureaucratic delays.  CMM turned the issue on its head by making it into an international trade issue, not a sanitary issue.  By convincing DG Trade in the European Commission, we built the case that the import permit was an unnecessary trade barrier that local producers did not face.

After meeting with the highest level officials at Profeco (the consumer protection agency), the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Economy and Cofemer (the

agency in charge of improving regulatory efficiency), which constituted several months of lobbying, we were able to effectively argue for the removal of our client’s product from the permit requirement list.

We continue to assist this client with its communication strategy and public policy objectives

Case 3:

CMM has worked for years for retail supermarket chains in Mexico.  In order to confront foreign competition, CMM has provided strategic advice that has helped these companies improve their competitiveness by lowering their costs.  We have also successfully handled a case related to this strategy that was brought before the Mexican Antitrust Commission.

We have also handled the communications strategy for this group of businesses, both inside Mexico and abroad, and were intimately involved in setting up the operations of the not-for-profit organization which serves the member companies.

Case 4

CMM conducts substantive research on public policy issues and has published the following documents over the last year:

  • Public Goods in Health:  A Case Study of Mexico
  • A Review of the Mexican Pharmaceutical Policy
  • Pension Reform in Mexico
  • Business Practices in Mexico
  • The Competitiveness of the Shoe Industry in Mexico
